Last week, Martin Allen attended a reception at 10 Downing Street to mark St George’s Day, celebrating the extraordinary contribution of volunteers across the country. He was invited by MP for Shoreham and East Worthing Tom Rutland, in his capacity as Chairman of Ropetackle Arts Centre, and to represent the many people who give their time, energy and passion to support Ropetackle’s work in Shoreham and Adur.
Martin said: “Moments like these are a powerful reminder that community organisations like Ropetackle simply could not exist without volunteers. From our front-of-house teams and box office assistants, to those working behind the scenes, their dedication is what allows us to keep our doors open and our programme thriving. This recognition at a national level felt like a tribute to each and every one of them.”
For nearly 20 years, Ropetackle has been at the heart of Shoreham’s cultural life. What began as an ambitious local vision has grown into a vibrant and much-loved venue, welcoming thousands of people each year to experience live music, theatre, comedy, talks and community events. It is a place where creativity flourishes and where people come together.

Martin and Tom reflected on the recent news that Ropetackle has been awarded a £371,000 Government grant. This funding will allow significant improvements to be made to the building, including refurbishing the box office, upgrading air conditioning, enhancing acoustics, and improving the auditorium. These are not just cosmetic change; they are vital investments that will improve the experience for audiences and performers alike, and help secure the future of the venue.
“Looking ahead, this support gives us renewed confidence as we continue to develop our programme and strengthen our role within the community. We remain committed to ensuring that Ropetackle is an inclusive, welcoming space where people of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy and participate in the arts,” Martin said.
“I would like to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who has supported Ropetackle over the years; our staff, volunteers, audiences, partners and funders. This recognition belongs to all of us, and we will ensure that Ropetackle continues to thrive for many years to come.”
