18-26 January 2023 at the Latest Music Bar and Ropetackle Arts Centre.

In partnership with the Latest Music Bar Brighton, Ropetackle is delighted to co-host the first Ukraine International Film Festival in January.

Featuring a diverse selection of films, from narrative shorts and documentaries, to feel-good rom-coms and hard hitting dramas, this will be a unique opportunity to experience Ukrainian culture and history through film. All films will be shown in the original Ukraine version with English subtitles.

The festival is directed by Nataliya Valda, Director of Ukrainian film production company Valmedia, aided by Murray Woodfield, Director of UK Film Festival London, and produced by Nataliya Valda and Latest Group CIC, the not-for-profit community organisation run in association with local television channel, Latest TV.

The festival runs across nine days, with screenings at Latest Music Bar from 18-26 January, and screenings at Ropetackle from 23-25 January. The festival launches at Latest Music Bar on Weds 18 Jan.

Nataliya Valda said: “The Festival has been established to raise the profile of Ukrainian Cinema in the UK as well as raising funds for Ukrainian Filmmakers. We have to support Ukraine with our efforts and the best way we could do it to give our people a voice to express themselves to the world. This is a cultural event, aimed at humanitarian goals and the cause of peace, against the war.”

AWARDS

All films will be judged by a panel at Ropetackle and Latest Music Bar, with the winning films screened at a later date at Duke of York’s Cinema or Dukes at Komedia.

The award ceremony for the winning films will take place at the Latest Music Bar on Thurs 26 Jan, 6pm.

The festival will go on to tour other UK cities throughout the year.
