Shoreham Wordfest: Literary Discussion Investigating Miss Austen

About this event

CELEBRATING JANE AUSTEN'S 250TH ANNIVERSARY

Join us as to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen's birth as we discuss the writer, her books and her legacy with two accomplished writers steeped in the world and works of the celebrated author.

Dr Helena Kelly is an expert on Jane Austen and her work, teaching the subject in Oxford. Twenty years after she first picked up Pride and Prejudice, Helena says she is still discovering new things about her favourite author. Her first book, Jane Austen, the Secret Radical was published in 2016. It introduced the reader to a passionate woman living in an age of revolution, where her novels, against a background of feminism, slavery, abuse and the treatment of the poor, were regarded as extraordinary and almost treasonous. Helena launches her new title The Worlds of Jane Austen: The Influences and Inspiration behind the Novels to coincide with the anniversary celebrations this year.

Jessica Bull is a lifelong Austen fan, and her debut novel Miss Austen Investigates was an immediate bestseller, casting Jane as a literary sleuth searching for the answers to a murder mystery and using all the appropriate 18th Century historical detail. Her much anticipated second novel in the series, A Fortune Most Fatal, published this year, presents Miss Austen with another mystery to solve. Sense, sensibility and a swindled inheritance!

Jessica studied English Literature at Bristol University, and Information Science at City University, London. She began her career as a librarian (under the false impression she could sit and read all day), before becoming a communications consultant and is now a best-selling author.
