About this event
Meet the World through Film and Food
Screen with No Borders brings together communities in Sussex and beyond to connect, engage and immerse themselves in the stories, people, landscapes and cultures of Global Majority countries. We create nourishing evenings with film, food and open conversations to explore themes such as justice, migration, love, memory and identity through a shared curiosity for our rich and diverse world.
Prayers for the Stolen (Tatiana Huezo, Mexico, Germany, 2021, 1:50min)
In Tatiana Huezo’s mesmerising debut, three young girls are coming of age in the rural village of Guerrero in South Mexico, which is dominated by local drug trade. Ana (Ana Cristina Ordóñez), Paula (Camila Gaal) and Maria (Blanca Itzel Pérez) navigate childhood and adolescence under the creeping terror of the cartel oppressors, learning how to avoid danger and the threat of human trafficking. A tender and sensorial tale of friendship and survival, of girlhood and mothering amidst harsh realities and breathtaking sceneries.
Food is served by Soraya at Taarof, a local chef and caterer who uses her mixed heritage food as a conduit for bringing people together to create a culturally enriched community.
