Ropetackle Storytellers: Beowulf

About this event

A thousand years ago, an epic poem was penned which would become one of the most important works of English literature. In it, the mighty hero Beowulf travels across the seas to the land of the Danes, where he faces the terrifying monster Grendel, who has taken over their mead hall and tears apart anyone who tries to defeat him. But Grendel is only the first of three monsters Beowulf faces over the course of his life as a hero, in a land where violence begets violence, and the lessons of the past are not passed on to future generations – with tragic consequences.

Three battles – three storytellers. Ropetackle Storyteller founders Amelia Ace Armande and Joshua Crisp are joined by mythographer and 'You're Dead to Me' writer Jon Norman-Mason, bringing the tale to life for a modern audience. As we celebrate a thousand years of Beowulf, the poem that inspired Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings', its central questions of what to do in the face of evil, and what is truly needed of our leaders, feels more timely than ever.
