Film:
To a Land Unknown (Mahdi Fleifel, 106 min)
In this gritty thriller-drama, Chatila (Mahmood Bakri) and Reda (brilliant newcomer Aram Sabbah), Palestinian cousins who escaped a refugee camp in Lebanon, are trying to survive in underground Athens, en route to what they hope will be a better life in Germany.
Inspired by real-life stories that Palestinian director Mahdi Fleifel has heard throughout his own displaced life in Dubai and then Denmark, the film is an empathetic, yet realistic, portrait of the refugee experience that does not shy away from the complex morality of criminality, smuggling and, ultimately, human nature.
