Open to music students up to GCSE at participating secondary schools including Shoreham Academy, Varndean (Brighton), and Steyning Grammar, this workshop will explore improvisation and ensemble playing on the blues – including a composition by Claire Martin, and a South African-style swing composition “Ukudansa”, by Julian Nicholas.

Julian will have already introduced the materials to participating schools and the students at the workshop will be those who want to take their experience of improvising further. Students will be working in the morning, experimenting with the techniques of improvisation, and jazz ensemble playing.

This workshop will culminate in a ‘show’ 1pm. Family and friends of participants and festival ticket-holders will have priority admission to the 1pm performance – which is free of charge.

*Please contact Ropetackle before Jan 9th if you wish to participate, leaving parental contact details, age, school and instrument. We will contact you letting you know if there is a space available for you.

We are proud to be working alongside the Starr Trust and BBC Radio 3, with support from Arts Council England.
