Summer Film Festival: Wonder
As part of its Summer Film Festival, Ropetackle Cinema is proud to present four films that demonstrate very different aspects of diversity and inclusivity.
WONDER…is a warm, persuasive argument for tolerance. Research shows a connection between children’s self-esteem and positive portrayals in media. This perfect family film deals with diversity, inclusivity, worry and fear. It tells the inspiring and heart-warming story of August Pullman, a sci-fi obsessed boy who always wears an enormous NASA helmet. Auggie’s severe facial disfigurements have prevented him from going to a mainstream school and he has previously been home-schooled.
When he negotiates the pitfalls of an elementary school for the first time as an outcast 10-year-old, Auggie outdoes his classmates and becomes the most unlikely of heroes winning the Harry Ward Beecher Medal in recognition of his many small acts of kindness that made the school community a better place. If at first his new classmates and the larger community sometimes struggle to discover acceptance, Auggie’s extraordinary journey unites them and proves you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out.
Julia Roberts plays Isabel, mum to Auggie and teenage sister Olivia (Izabela Vidovic). Dad Nate (Owen Wilson) rounds out the family. But this is Jacob Tremblay’s film and its themes of compassion, acceptance and kindness sound loud and clear. This is a film with a big heart.
