South Coast Jazz Recommends: Oli Rockberger
Monday 23rd October 2017 -
Kicking off our brand new series of jazz gigs featuring exciting, must-see artists ahead of the South Coast Jazz Festival 2018, we welcome London-born pianist and singer-songwriter Oli Rockberger.
“Oli can conjure up echoes of Randy Newman, Todd Rundgren and Peter Gabriel, yet still inhabit a sound world all of his own” ~ Jazzwise
Having worked with the likes of Carly Simon, John Mayer, Gloria Gaynor and Louis Cole amongst many others, while currently performing as part of Laura Mvula’s touring band, Rockberger is an incredibly talented and versatile artist.
His forthcoming studio album ‘Sovereign’ draws from viewpoints of transition, growth and independence, inspired by his decision to return to London after years living in the US. Following successful graduation from Berklee College Of Music, Rockberger developed a hugely formative New York career as sideman to big name jazz instrumentalists including Randy Brecker, Will Lee and Nathan East. Now based in the UK, he continues to work internationally and is more in-demand than ever.
Rockberger will perform with his solo project at Ropetackle, joined by a stellar group featuring BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winning violinist/vocalist Hannah Read (Songs Of Separation), bassist Michael Janisch (Diane Reeves), drummer Marijus Aleksa (China Moses), and guitarist Giorgio Serci (Kenny Wheeler).
