Shoreham Wordfest: Fabricating Lureland – Shifting Perspectives Of Peacehaven
Saturday 14th October 2017 -
With Julia Winckler, photographer and senior lecturer at the University Of Brighton.
As part of her ongoing PhD research project, Julia has tracked the shifting perspectives of Peacehaven. During the interwar years, the new estate was marketed as a garden city by the sea, a home for heroes and a sunny seaside resort. Others, such as Virginia and Leonard Woolf, saw the new development as a blot on the previously unsullied Sussex Downs that sparked the national movement, which became the Campaign For The Protection Of Rural England.
Documenting traces of the initial construction and working with historical records, Julia has also engaged with older residents and descendants of the original settlers to explore how the early aspirations matched the eventual development. Some of them will join Julia for this Wordfest talk.
