A film based on the true story of Melita Norwood, an 87-year-old widow living in respectable Bexleyheath who was arrested in 1999 for treason. Red Joan, played by Dame Judi Dench, is a British government civil servant who is recruited by the KGB in the mid-1930s and who successfully transmits key British state secrets to the Soviet Union for 40 years. She remains undetected for over half a century eventually being exposed as the KGB’s longest-serving Soviet spy.
