COLETTE

‘a thoroughly entertaining biopic and an overdue testament to Kiera Knightley’s underrated gifts’

It’s 1892 France. Struggling self-important writer Willy (Dominic West) woos naïve country girl Colette (Knightley). After their marriage she is transplanted to the artistic and intellectual splendour of Paris where they struggle for money. Willy, feeling the financial strain, sets her to work writing novels based on her school days which he spices up with a little Sapphic subtext. When the novels become huge hits, Willy takes all the credit, squandering the spoils on prostitutes and property. Colette’s fight over creative ownership and  gender roles drives her to overcome societal restraints, revolutionise literature, fashion and sexual expression. She became the most celebrated female author in French history.
