It Had to Be Two – A Musician’s Guide to a Happy Marriage
Saturday 31st August 2019 - Starts 8pm
TICKET PRICE: £15 (Friends £13)
Paul Cavaciuti & Nadine André are both successful performing musicians in their own right, and are happily married – most of the time. Following the great examples in love set out by the likes of Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Hoagy Carmichael and Beethoven, Nadine & Paul take the audience through a journey of how to live in perfect harmony, both on and off the stage.
This is the first ever public performance of their special recipe, tried and tested over 10 years: Take one classical pianist and one jazz drummer and mix well. Throw in a piano, drum set, a pinch of kazoo and a handful of song. Leave to simmer before serving with a chilled glass of Chopin.
Two Different Musical Worlds
It Had To Be Two is a duo; a marriage of two heads, two hearts and four hands. What started as an interrupted practice session of classical pianist Nadine André by her jazz drummer husband Paul Cavaciuti, quickly grew into an intriguing new project; an act exploring the coming together of two very different musical worlds.
The realisation that Bach grooves and Chopin swings roused great excitement in the Cavaciuti household. Paul’s breadth of experience as an international jazz drummer and percussionist, playing regularly with ensembles as diverse as The David Gordon Trio and the London Chamber Orchestra, gives his interpretations of music by the great Classical composers creates a unique pulse, and provides a completely new way to experience them. Nadine’s ease and versatility at the piano comes from a long and busy career as a soloist and chamber musician, and her fluid and vibrant renditions of works by Debussy, Beethoven and Rachmaninoff, among others, are all imaginatively and expertly accompanied by Paul.
Coupled with their classical innovation, Paul and Nadine also share a love of early jazz, and decided to make this music an integral part of their show. Most songs written in America between 1920 and 1940 are about love, and the duo noticed early on that they were naturally injecting their performances of these numbers with comical references to their own relationship. There is a certain irony to this show, as Paul and Nadine weave together music by the romantically-challenged songwriters of 20th century America and European classical composers with their disastrous love lives, all to provide their audiences with fine examples of how to live “happily ever after”.
