The Lambrettas came into being in the late 70s. Original members Doug Sanders, Paul Wincer, Mark Ellis, and Jez Bird played their first show on Hastings Pier, and after just a few months of gigs they were quickly signed to Elton John’s prestigious Rocket Records.
Most remembered for the hit single Poison Ivy from their hugely successful debut album Beat Boys In The Jet Age, The Lambrettas went on to release 8 singles, 2 albums, and toured extensively for 3 years. In 1982 however, the boys called it a day.
Fast forward to 2007 and Doug and Jez met up to discuss getting back together, sadly soon after Jez became ill, and 2008 lost a battle against cancer.
Come 2009 and the anniversary of Quadrophenia, Doug and Paul were asked if they would get together to perform a short set at the ‘Modrophenia’ event, just down the road in Brighton. They were joined by two well suited and talented new generation players – Phil Edwards on guitar and Chris Venzi-James on bass. Following the gig, it became clear that the chemistry between Doug and Paul was still very much alive, and The Lambrettas were reborn. Inspired by this renewed energy and passion, they have been playing gigs up and down the UK, Ireland, and Europe ever since. Due to other commitments, Chris has now been replaced by Nick Beetham on bass.
The current set includes songs from the iconic Beat Boys album alongside hit singles including Poison Ivy, D-a-a-ance, Another Day (Another Girl), plus a few musical homages – the music and live experience is as energetic and fresh as it has ever been.
2015 is set to be an exciting year for The Lambrettas, Beat Boys In The Jet Age is due to be re-released in February, and writing and recording of a brand new album is also currently underway. This is the perfect time to see this iconic band as they continue to fly the flag for the mod-revival right up to the present day!
