Shoreham Wordfest 2014: Out Of Silence – Stunning Poetry & Fiery Music
Friday 26th September 2014 - Starts 8pm
Stunning poetry and fiery music with author John Harvey, poet Lee Harwood and the John Lake Quartet.
John Harvey, award winning author of the Charlie Resnick detective series, reads poetry from his new collection, Out Of Silence, accompanied by John Lake’s fiery four-piece band, celebrating in words and music some of the great jazz musicians of the past such as Chet Baker, Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, and Lester Young. Joining them as special guest is Lee Harwood, one of the finest poets working in England today. Lee will be reading from his new book The Orchid Boat.
The John Lake Quartet is a piano-led, jazz and modern music ensemble, with John Lake on piano, Simon Brewin on bass guitar, Simon Cambers on percussion, and Phil Paton on saxes. Based in Brighton & Hove, the band play John Lake’s original jazz compositions alongside covers of artists such as Chick Corea, Michel Camilo, Hiromi, and The Yellowjackets. They have considerable experience performing jazz with poetry including appearances with John Harvey, Anjan Saha (Live Literature Lounge, UK), F. D. Reeve (USA, Golden Rose Poetry Award) at Ledbury Poetry Festival in 2009, Rommi Smith (UK) at Keats House in 2012, and Kadija George at the Barbican Library, London in 2013.
“There is a tenderness here that many British poets do not risk” ~ John Burnside, Out of Silence Review
