Caruso & The Monkey House Trial
Friday 2nd November 2012 - Starts 8pm
Celebrity. Scandal. Monkeys. Opera!
‘High quality theatre’ ~ Edinburgh Spotlight
‘Impressive’ ~ The Stage
‘Jarquin is a great singer and a natural story teller’ ~ The Scotsman
When legendary Tenor Enrico Caruso is accused of pinching women’s bottoms at the Central Park Zoo in New York, it’s not his reputation but his whole career that’s at stake. With text drawn from contemporary newspaper accounts, the audience plays the jury and must pass judgment: Did Caruso commit an act of gross indecency? Was he a notorious womaniser or the victim of police entrapment?
Prodigal’s opera hero returns in a new collaboration with Andrew G. Marshall.
Featuring live singing from Puccini and Verdi.
☆☆☆☆ “Jarquin’s ease with opera, his physicality in creating all the characters and ability to play with his audience through expression and pauses, impresses and delivers a piece of high quality theatre.”
☆☆☆☆ “Take an actual story from history about a famous singer named Enrico Caruso, which happens to be set in fantastic New York City, add a talented singer-actor Ignacio Jarquin, open it on The Fringe and what have you got? Great theatre.”
The Edinburgh Reporter
☆☆☆☆”This is both a well penned and imagined study of a historical moment with resonances for today as well as an excellent character study brought vividly to the stage by the charismatic Ignacio Jarquin and Prodigal Theatre.”
